Stage One: The Story Often Exists Before the Script

The decision about which story is worth the bet is already made before anyone calls „action“ on a short drama set. Tracking a few hits backward often turns up a book at the start My Gangster Baby Daddy Pampers Me to Paradise full episodes of the chain. Breaking the Ice, ReelShort’s 2024 hockey romance built around a secret child, is adapted from the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. On November 1, 2025, ReelShort released Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series based on a novel by Cora Reilly. A web novel and webtoon are the basis of Quiet in the Office!, a 2026 office romance from Korea that carries a 19+ age rating. A number of app owners also run reading businesses, which keeps source material close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater operates the books app My Passion, and GoodNovel is GoodShort’s Google Play developer name. Without a book, writers lean on proven tropes such as revenge, billionaire romance, identity reveals and family drama. The script’s task is to squeeze a long drama story into scenes, each serving up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.

Stage Two: Casting Known Faces

Casting is where the format’s economics show up on screen. When you look through the cast lists for short series on IMDb, the same names keep showing up. Noah Fearnley fronted ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and came back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. In 2025, Rosa Singerman fronted two GoodShort titles, Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, the latter opposite Franky Cammarata. Since a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over, it matters a great deal that a lead with a following on one app arrives at the next title with a head start. In Los Angeles, DramaBox has a production team. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so studios are also casting with a specific viewer in mind.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Filmed in About Eight Days

TheWrap says that a Western short drama usually costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is filmed in eight to ten days. The picture is similar in Wikipedia’s overview of the format, where a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes is pegged at $150,000 to $250,000. Close to nine episodes‘ worth of material every working day: that is what a 70-episode series shot in eight days requires, by simple arithmetic. Chinese producers selling abroad have reported leaner numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture placed a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Per finished episode, that comes to roughly $1,400 to $2,100. Jiuzhou also stated that 20 percent of the more than 600 titles it had produced for overseas markets were original overseas productions, while about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations. Dubbing lets a studio recycle a finished domestic series, so the expensive shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Cutting to 60–100 Seconds

Framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone, the footage is cut into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds in the editing room. At that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is designed around a question the next episode promises to answer. The cliffhanger is the house style, the mechanism that carries you from one installment to the next. Stacked together, those segments give a 70-episode series roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return, a sign of how widely episode counts vary by title. Viewers who never open the app can still watch the same footage, since ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Editors, in other words, are editing video dramas for several screens at once.

Stage Five: Deciding Where the Paywall Falls

The last creative call doubles as a commercial one. Free access covers the first eight to ten episodes in the standard model TheWrap describes. In 2024 TheWrap counted the first eight episodes as free, whereas ReelShort’s own blog places its free run at usually five to 15 episodes. When the free run ends, coins unlock the episodes, with a standard cost of about 60 coins per episode according to ReelShort’s blog. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Prices depend on country, platform and promotion, so the store you use may show something different. Placement is the controversial part, because paywalls dropping right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Any coin generator or modded „unlimited coins“ app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and best avoided.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Generated Series

The newest production stage eliminates the camera entirely. Alongside its live-action catalogue, ReelShort now streams animated motion comics. Arthur Lancaster, the protagonist of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as „Johnny“ and eventually unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape, and it lists no cast. This title should not be mixed up with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. DramaWave has gone farthest, with more than 80 percent of its newly released content AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which also reported that the app’s annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 that AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, before critics widely branded it „AI slop“.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Line

Established studios have taken notice, and the plainest example is Fox Entertainment. Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, received an equity investment from Fox in October 2025. Fox also committed to making more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app. Holywater raised a further $22 million in January 2026 through a round led by Horizon Capital; My Drama, meanwhile, took home the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. Seeing a network-scale producer commit to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has moved from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line Summed Up

The logic of the business comes into focus when the stages are placed side by side. The shoot is the fixed, expensive block, and much of the rest is built around it. Scripts usually arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, casting relies on known faces, and the edit is designed around cliffhangers that feed a paywall. Fans who search for a „reel short drama“ usually have ReelShort titles in mind, but TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The table below summarizes typical time and cost at each stage, using only publicly reported figures. It says so rather than guessing whenever no reliable figure has been published.

Stage Usual time / cost What takes place
Source material and scripting No published figure A novel, web fiction or a proven trope gets adapted; Breaking the Ice adapts Shutout, and Bound by Honor adapts Cora Reilly’s novel
The casting stage No published figure Leads are picked, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this stage
Filming 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) 50 to 70+ episodes are shot in a vertical frame
Editing Episodes of 60–100 seconds Footage is split into installments that each end on a cliffhanger
Release and paywall placement The first 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); about 60 coins per later episode on ReelShort Viewers unlock episodes with coins, with ads or with a weekly pass costing about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026
AI and animation Costs undisclosed Motion comics like The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases AI-generated
Co-production with a studio 200+ titles across two years (Fox for My Drama) An established studio creates vertical series for an app
